The current president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, responded on Thursday to Javier Milei’s comments calling him “ignorant.” The leader of Argentina had referred to López Obrador as a “conservative faco,” leading to a Twitter exchange between the two leaders.
In his response on Twitter, López Obrador expressed confusion over why Argentine citizens voted for someone like Milei, whom he described as inaccurate and disdainful of the people. He highlighted Milei’s derogatory remarks towards him and also towards the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro.
Milei had called Petro a “murderous terrorist” and accused him of being a “communist,” demonstrating a pattern of personal attacks against various political figures. Despite this, López Obrador did not announce any retaliatory measures. Instead, he chose to express solidarity with Gustavo Petro, whom he described as a defender of the poor and unjustly targeted by Milei.
Unlike Colombia, which announced the expulsion of Argentine diplomats in response to the verbal attacks, López Obrador maintained his stance on preserving diplomatic ties with Argentina. He has emphasized the importance of maintaining diplomatic relations with countries despite differences in opinion.
