Allegan County Board Appoints Jacqueline Billette as New Health Officer

On Thursday, April 25, the Allegan County Board of Commissioners unanimously appointed Jacqueline Billette as the county’s next health officer. Her appointment is pending final approval from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in accordance with state law. The county kept the state informed throughout the hiring process.

Billette, originally from the Traverse City area, joins Allegan County from the Central Michigan District Health Department, which serves six counties in Michigan. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English, as well as a master’s degree in public health. Billette expressed her commitment to public health, stating that she pursued this field to assist her communities in any way possible.

During her interview with commissioners, Billette emphasized the importance of community education and relationship-building in public health initiatives. She believes that education is key in empowering individuals to make informed decisions regarding their own health and lifestyle. Billette also stressed the significance of transparency, clear communication, and listening to concerns as vital components of her upcoming role.

The former health officer, Angelique Joynes, resigned in January after serving for a decade. The county received over 20 applicants for the position and conducted interviews with five or six candidates. The interview process was thorough and involved multiple rounds of questions, including scenarios related to public health issues. Commissioner Dean Kapenga praised the selection process and expressed his satisfaction with the appointment of Billette to the position.
