High Median Salaries at Meta: Efficiency and Cutting Costs Amid Big Tech Boom

The average annual salary for Meta employees is $379,000

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has recently disclosed that its median employee earned over $379,000 in 2023. This figure is higher than many tech jobs and on par with rivals like Google and Amazon. However, it is not as high as other Big Tech companies where positions regularly offer above $300,000 in compensation.

Despite the attractive compensation at Meta, the company is undergoing significant changes. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has implemented a “Year of Efficiency” to maximize productivity through performance reviews and layoffs, which is now a permanent state of affairs. The company has cut 22% of its staff since 2022, with no end in sight. Although Meta reported strong earnings in its latest quarterly call, investors are concerned about the company’s plan to spend billions on AI technology.

Meta employs around 67,000 people, so there is considerable variation in salaries. Higher-level software engineers and researchers tend to make more than product designers and user experience professionals at Meta. While Meta’s median salary is higher than the average tech position, it is not as high as other Big Tech companies like Google and Amazon. However, CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s total compensation in 2023 was $24.4 million, primarily from security and logistical costs. However, Zuckerberg’s net worth is primarily tied to his stock options rather than his salary.
