Siemens’ Acquisition of ebm-papst’s IDT Business Boosts Flexible Production Automation in Europe

ebm-papst’s Industrial Drive Technology Business Acquired by Siemens

Siemens AG has agreed to acquire the industrial drive technology (IDT) business of ebm-papst. This business, which employs approximately 650 people, specializes in intelligent, integrated mechatronic systems in the protective extra-low voltage range and innovative motion control systems. These systems are commonly used in free-range driverless transport systems. The acquisition is expected to complement Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio and enhance its position as a leading solutions provider for flexible production automation.

Cedrik Neike, a member of Siemens AG’s Managing Board and CEO of Digital Industries, expressed excitement about the acquisition, stating that ebm-papst’s innovative portfolio and skilled workforce are a great match for Siemens. He believes that this acquisition will allow Siemens to explore new business opportunities in the rapidly expanding market for intelligent, battery-powered drive solutions in intralogistics and mobile robot solutions.

The IDT products are considered intelligent, integrated mechatronic systems that support the automation and digitalization of production processes. By integrating these products into Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio, Siemens aims to drive growth in the market segment by offering comprehensive solutions for factory automation. The IDT solutions are used in mobile robots, driverless transport vehicles, and automation of auxiliary processes, contributing to increased flexibility and productivity in modern production environments.

By integrating the IDT portfolio into its existing automation offerings and leveraging its global sales network, Siemens expects to access new markets and realize substantial business potential in the realm of flexible and autonomous factory automation. The transaction is anticipated to be finalized by mid-2025 pending necessary approvals from foreign trade and merger control authorities. The IDT business of ebm-papst is currently located in St. Georgen and Lauf an der Pegnitz, Germany
