Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport Set to Become the World’s Largest Airport with $35 Billion Expansion Project

Dubai Investing $35 Billion in Expanding World’s Largest Airport

The Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai is currently undergoing a massive expansion, with the goal of becoming the world’s largest airport. The project, which is part of the planned city of Dubai South, will have five runways and 400 gates with a capacity of 260 million passengers.

The expansion of the airport comes as travel to Dubai returns to pre-pandemic levels, with 17.15 million international visitors in 2023. This growth in tourism and trade underscores the importance of investing in infrastructure to support future development and prosperity in Dubai.

The Al Maktoum International Airport was opened in 2010 as part of a strategy to create a thriving economic zone with jobs and residences for a million people across 55 square miles. Currently, it has one terminal and two runways, but will soon be expanded to include five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates.

Surrounded by a new city that will house 1 million people, the Al Maktoum facility will serve as a central hub for global travel, trade, and urban development once it is completed. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, announced the upgrade of the airport stating that Dubai is building for future generations.

The construction of this ambitious project is expected to cost $35 billion over the next ten years and will take place over several phases. Once finished, it will be able to accommodate more than twice as many passengers as its current capacity of 87 million passengers per year.
